New action-RPG development begins

You probably still remember the news we posted a couple of weeks ago about the closure of Flagship Studios and the cancellation of Hellgate: London and Mythos, two massively multiplayer online games. Although this piece of news seemed to have no possible happy ending for the game industry, things changed since the team that was working on the development of Mythos has joined forces and created Runic Games, a game development studio that will focus on bringing quality MMORPGs to the public.

The new company's employees worked in the past for Blizzard North and the great Diablo. Now they are planning to bring a similar experience to the online world, just like they had planned with the canceled Mythos. However, this time they hope everything will work fine and their game will be released.

"This has been a fairly difficult time I think for all of us - Flagship really felt like family, and losing that is very trying," Travis Baldree, president of Runic told Edge magazine. "We were so close to bringing Mythos to open beta (and shortly thereafter to commercialization), that it's heartbreaking to know that it won't see the light of day as we intended."

Unfortunately for the team, it appears that they won't be able to continue the development of Mythos because of some "enormous obstacles" along the way. However, Runic Games plans to bring us a game similar to Mythos (and Diablo) where fast combat and socialization would be the main focuses - and we doubt it would have any trouble in doing a great job, since it has, basically, the same team and lots of experience to back it up.

"We're fortunate enough to have our entire Mythos team on board for Runic," Baldree said. "The spirit of development that we fostered here in the Northwest is very much alive." Let's wish them more luck this time!
