Microsoft is providing an update for Windows 7 customers that have come across “0x0000007F” blue screen of death errors on their machines. The refresh offered by the Redmond company applies only to 32-bit (x86) flavors of Windows 7, as it appears that the specific problem it has been designed to fix does not impact the 64-bit (x64) variant of the platform.

According to the software giant, Windows 7 “0x0000007F” have been reported on computers with antivirus software installed.

“Consider the following scenario: you run an active antivirus application on a computer that is running Windows 7. You restart the computer.

“In this scenario, you may receive a Stop error message that resembles the following: STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000008, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

“This issue occurs after you install certain updates on the computer. The parameters that are after the "0x0000008" parameter in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer,” the company said.

Microsoft has underlined that not all "0x0000007F" Stop errors are generated by the same problem that KB2502285 is designed to resolve.

The issue is related to a conflict between Windows 7 and the security solution installed which can cause the exhausting of kernel stack memory.

“This issue occurs because both the operating system and the antivirus application read from the same files in the startup process of the operating system. Therefore, kernel stack memory may be exhausted, and you receive the Stop error message,” Microsoft said.

“After you install an update that updates certain system files on the computer, the operating system tries to verify the digital signatures on all new files.”

The Redmond company did not specify which antivirus software is causing the issue when deployed on top of Windows 7.
