In specific scenarios, customers attempting to access a USB storage device from Windows 7 will be unable to do so.

In the eventuality that the process doesn’t fail, it may take a very long time before users see any results of their action.

Microsoft has officially confirmed the issue and revealed that customers running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 can also be affected, just as those leveraging Windows 7 SP1.

“This issue is seen when you use the Sonic Stage Mastering Studio software that is included with the Sony digital audio recorder device,” the software giant explained.

“You try to use this software to import files into or export files from a Sony PCM-D series digital audio recorder, then it would fail with the error message that resembles the following: “Couldn't find PCM-D series. Please check the connection”.”

According to the Redmond company, additional USB storage devices can also be impacted by the problem, including USB floppy disk drives, for example.

Microsoft has identified the source of the issue and is already helping out users that are experiencing problems.

Customers recognizing the symptoms described above can get access to a hotfix that Microsoft is providing them.

At the time of this article the Redmond company had not offered an update to resolve the glitch, nor detailed any sort of manual workaround that customers could turn to.

But those users that are indeed experiencing access failures to their USB storage devices from Windows 7 SP1, or that notice that getting access to such devices takes a very long time, can take advantage of the hotfix provided via KB2496290.

Customers need to be aware that the hotfix in question is designed to fix the specific type of problem described above, and should not be deployed otherwise. Most probably, Microsoft will include KB2496290 in Windows 7 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP2.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) RTM Build 7601.17514.101119-1850 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) RTM are available for download here.
