Microsoft is helping Windows 7 Service Pack 1 customers affected by stop error 0x0000007F when copying a file over a network to resolve the issue.

Users will be able to download and deploy a hotfix offered by the software giant on its Support website.

According to the Redmond company, the glitch impacts not only those running Windows 7 SP1, but also customers with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

However, the Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machines need to be set up a certain way in order for them to crash with a Blue Screen of Death.

This will happen for users that “configure the computer to automatically connect to a wireless network. Then, [customers] restart the computer or resume the computer from sleep mode or from hibernation,” Microsoft said. “[Users] start data transfer with another computer through a wired or wireless network connection.”

In addition, the Redmond company stressed that Stop: 0x0000007F is only presented under rare circumstances.

This is the message that customers get: “STOP: 0x0000007F (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.”

Microsoft explained that “This issue may also occur on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and that has hotfix 979612 ((http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979612/ ) A hotfix is available that improves TCP loopback latency and UDP latency in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows 7) installed.”

The issue generating the BSOD error has been already identified, and it appears that the source of the problem is the platform itself, in scenarios involving failures to allocate enough stack space.

Via KB2519736 Microsoft is providing affected customers with a hotfix designed to address the specific issue described above.

I need to stress the fact that 0x0000007F BSOD errors are not limited to this particular problem, and customers will need to make sure that they’re deploying the right hotfix as otherwise they could in fact make it worst for themselves.

Windows 7 SP1 RTM and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RTM are available for download here.
