News from California says that five schools in this part of the United States are to soon get a total of 1.2 megawatts worth of new solar power capacity.

The schools are all located in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and their brand-new solar systems are to be installed in parking lots.

According to Clean Technica, installing such systems in parking lots and other similar spaces helps put underused spaces to better use and also provides some much needed shade for cars.

The same source informs that the SunPower solar systems these five schools are to be fitted with by the end of this summer are some of the most efficient currently available on the market.

Their combined clean energy output will help the schools cut their annual electricity costs by as much as $380,000 (€274,434), which means that more money will be available for education.

What's more, it is estimated that the systems will offset some 921 tons of carbon dioxide emissions yearly. This predicted drop in emissions is the equivalent of taking 3,480 cars off roads over the next two decades.

Given the urgency to limit greenhouse gas emissions and thus put a leash on climate change and global warming, it comes as good news that schools too are making an effort to green up their ways.
