The Fitbit application for Android-based devices, one of the most popular apps in the Health & Fitness category, has made available for download a new flavor of its software for devices running under Google’s Android operating system.

As the Fitbit notes, it is the first company in this area to provide Bluetooth 4.0 syncing on Android devices.

Apparently, the new update will provide the option to sync in real time the Fitbit One, Fitbit Zip and Fitbit Flex wireless activity trackers with Samsung devices.

Thus, users will be able to access their Fitbit dashboard regardless where they are, so as to enjoy real-time updates, and motivating notifications, and also to engage in fitness competitions with friends, all straight from their Android smartphones.

“By giving immediate feedback and encouraging you to move more, Bluetooth 4.0 syncing now further helps Android users make fitness part of their everyday lifestyle,” the company notes.

The Fitbit app for Android arrived in the Google Play Store with support for Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Note II, but more handsets should be added to the list in the near future.

“Fitbit’s Bluetooth 4.0 will be available in the Google Play marketplace and for all international markets,” the company notes.

“Fitbit is on the forefront of mobile accessibility, initially as the first and only company in its category to offer an Android app, Fitbit is now the first and only to offer Android Bluetooth 4.0 syncing.”

Fitbit also comes with NFC compatibility, the ability to create and edit silent alarms, support for international food database, and a new distance tile on dashboard and push notification setting in the app following the latest update.

“This updated Android app joins Fitbit’s iPhone, iPad and Microsoft Surface Tablet apps that essentially turn your smartphone or tablet into your dashboard, giving you access to Fitbit’s rich graphs and tools (leaderboard, badges, etc.) when you’re on the go to keep you motivated throughout the day,” the company explains.

Users can find the latest Fitbit flavor available for download through this page in the Google Play store.
