Purported picture taken with iPhone 5 handset

A nicely arranged plate of sushi appears to have been the first choice for an object photographed through the lens of an iPhone 5 handset.

Picked up by smartphone-centric blog Pocketnow, this photo initially ‘claimed’ to be taken by an iPhone 4, but it was later revealed through EXIF data tinkering that there was more than met the eye, literally.

First off, the image is reportedly cropped from its original 3264 x 2448 resolution to 2235 x 2291 (5.12 megapixels).

The original is, in the blog’s own words, “just shy of eight megapixels”, which is exactly what image sensor manufacturers and lens makers are crafting for Apple’s iPhone 5, according to industry sources.

There’s more. The lens is reportedly a 4.3mm f/2.4 which, according to the source, is closer to that of a point-and-shoot, rather than the iPhone 4’s 3.85mm f/2.8 camera module.

And there’s even more evidence that this may be, in fact, an image taken by an iPhone 5 prototype unit.

As any photo manipulator will tell you, EXIF data also contains location details. Apparently the photo was taken at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California.

As any Apple fanatic will tell you, that’s where Steve Jobs used to rule as CEO until last month when he resigned, handing over the reigns to fellow exec Tim Cook.

It is believed the image was shot by an Apple engineer who probably believed his artful sushi plate deserved to be the subject of the first iPhone 5 camera test.

And we could’t agree more. That plate deserves painting on a canvas.

According to industry sources privy of Apple’s iPhone 5 roadmap, OmniVision and Sony are the suppliers of the 8-megapixel image sensors targeted at the fifth-generation handset.

The lenses that complete the camera module are reportedly coming from Largan Precision and Genius, two of the companies reportedly tapped by Apple to supply the glass needed to enhance the sensor’s ‘view’.
