Microsoft has wrapped up and announced the availability of its first Windows release in 2011: Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 RTM. Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 is positioned as the platform of choice for ruggedized handheld terminals and devices, notes David Wurster, Senior Product Manager, Windows Embedded, citing statistics from analyst firm VDC Research.

Together, Windows Embedded CE and Windows Mobile 6 operating systems dominate the handheld market with a share larger than 87%. Wurster revealed that some 2.3 million ruggedized devices went to customers worldwide back in 2009.

At the same time, the software giant continues to work with partners such as Intermec, Motorola and Honeywell , which produce Windows Embedded CE or Windows Mobile powered devices.

“Businesses such as retailers, delivery companies and others that rely on handheld computers depend on Windows Embedded Handheld to run critical business applications in an environment which integrates well with the rest of their systems, making them easy and efficient to use and to maintain,” Wurster said.

“These devices provide mobile workers with access to real-time information such as inventory, product information and pricing; and they help improve customer responsiveness and sales effectiveness, and secure business-critical data.”

The Redmond company has based Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 on the old Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system.

This essentially means that customers opting for Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 will be offered the same range of capabilities as Windows Phone 7’s predecessor, including connectivity, security and management, but also the same development platform and application ecosystem.

“These device makers can take advantage of Windows Mobile 6.5’s large community of hardware and software vendors, which supply a wide variety of off-the-shelf and custom solutions,” Wurster added.

“By delivering end-to-end solutions for device operating system needs such as data/voice connectivity, manufacturers can focus their efforts on providing the features their customers need most, and which differentiate their devices in the market.”

The availability of Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 RTM also marks the extension of the support lifecycle associated with the operating system.

Customers running ruggedized handheld terminals and devices with the latest iteration of Windows Embedded Handheld will be able to enjoy mainstream support through December 2014, and extended support through December 2019.
