It’s the movie that got people hyped even since before it went into production. It’s the “feel-bad movie of Christmas,” as the red band bootleg trailer that emerged online describes it. It is “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” – and you can see the first trailer below.

Starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson’s best selling trilogy, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” takes a plunge into a world of mystery, corruption, murder and the IT world.

The Hollywood version of the film is directed by none other than David Fincher, whose past credits include “The Social Network” and “Fight Club,” so this is a promising movie even without the trailer.

Which brings up to the topic of the trailer: it was uploaded on YouTube over the weekend and, surprisingly, Sony hasn’t made a move yet to have it removed, which has sparked talk that it may not be as much of a bootleg as it’s an intentional leak.

IFC says that, regardless of who leaked the trailer before the original release date, it’s pretty much a “gem” from the opening seconds to the closing moments when the tagline appears onscreen: “It’s the feel-bad movie of Christmas. She’s coming.”

“Set to a Karen O-Trent Reznor cover of the Led Zeppelin classic "Immigrant Song," it is a stunner without a single word of dialogue,” IFC writes.

It would make sense for Sony to leak it because such a move would allow it to kickstart a viral campaign, while also skipping certain regulations from the MPAA concerning red band trailer.s

“The minimally risqué trailer […] is able to circumvent the normal age restriction process studios must abide by online if it were an official release. Add in the pristine picture and sound quality and the thematically appropriate nature of a leak to kick off a viral campaign and it all seems to make sense,” IFC writes.

The fact that Sony is yet to pull the trailer would also serve as argument that it’s not really a “leak” but more of a first phase in a new viral campaign.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is out in theaters on December 21. Check out the trailer below – *Please be advised that discretion is recommended when viewing it.
