Hard disk drives got their fame for being so versatile. They can store anything. And yet Seagate got it into its head that it would be a good thing to launch an HDD specifically aimed at video recording.

Truth be told, it has a point. There are loads of media players, digital video recorders (DVRs) and set-top boxes (STBs), as well as surveillance systems, that could benefit from high-capacity storage devices.

Normal HDDs are acceptable, but Seagate figured it would make it easier all around by releasing the Video 3.5 HDD.

This drive has a capacity of 4 TB, which is the equivalent of 480 hours of high-definition (HD) content.

It also has an annual failure rate of only 0.55%, which means it will do quite well in 24/7 operation.

Low power consumption is also assured, and heat emissions are supposed to be very low as well.

"Leveraging Seagate's 10 years of experience understanding the requirements of the video market, we've combined our knowledge on heat, acoustics and power to deliver what we believe to be the most reliable DVR drive in the world," said Scott Horn, Seagate vice president of marketing.

"Our commitment to deliver a drive with unrivaled reliability ensures the safekeeping of consumers' content as well as keeping DVRs, STBs, and surveillance systems in the field longer."

The Video 3.5 HDD can support up to 16 simultaneous HD streams or 20 standard-definition streams. It also operates below the standard range of audible sound. Seagate really outdid itself when it made the platter motor and the reading mechanism. More info here.

"We congratulate Seagate on its newest innovation," said Mark Jackson, president of EchoStar Technologies, one of the top DVR manufacturers for the satellite market in North America.

"Seagate is a leader in the dedicated video HDD space, delivering top-of-the-line products that help us bring customers the most advanced and reliable DVRs in the industry."
