Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has just announced the first of its PowerEdge server models to comply with the new specifications of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star. According to the company, which worked closely with the EPA to develop the new energy-efficiency specification, users of the company's PowerEdge R610 and R710 server platform have the comfort of knowing that their server systems qualify for the new Energy Star specification. The announcement is part of the company's commitment to provide its customers with performance-driven, energy-efficient server solutions.

“Dell is committed to helping companies increase data center performance while reducing operational expenses by supporting the Energy Star for Servers effort. We support the EPA in ushering in a new era of awareness and innovative thinking around solving the industry’s energy challenge,” Sally Stevens, vice president of Platform Marketing, Dell, said.

Both the PowerEdge R610 and the R710 server systems have been designed on Intel's latest Xeon server platform, providing users with a 1U server that can be configured with up to two high-performance Xeon processors. One of the differences between the R610 and the R710 is that the first offers 12 memory DIMMs, with support for a maximum memory capacity of 96GB, while the second is featured with 18 memory DIMMs and a maximum of 144GB of memory.

Among some of the features that have been enabled on Dell's PowerEdge server systems, the company highlighted the use of its Energy Smart power supplies, the Dell Active Power Controller (DAPC), the Dell Energy Smart System design and the Energy Smart Management.

The system vendor stated its commitment to having its server systems meet the Energy Star power specifications, participating in the program since 1993, with products being offered in a variety of form factors, including desktop, workstation, laptop and display. These products are designed to meet the EPA requirements for Energy Star specifications.
