It was about time: after fans had only paparazzi shots to make do for many months, the first official photos from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” are out. And they’re pretty wicked, as well.

Disney has released a first batch of brand new photos from the upcoming film, showing both the leading man, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, and his new (old) paramour Angelina, as portrayed by Penelope Cruz.

As USA Today also points out, while there’s no denying that they look very good and are bound to get fans of the successful franchise all hyped up about the film, the pics will also confirm for audiences that, at the end of the day, Sparrow remains the worst team player in the history of cinematography.

Not that fans are complaining or anything along those lines, because Sparrow also happens to be one of the most loved characters ever, so there’s balance in that.

“People should know by now that Captain Jack Sparrow is not a team player. On one hand, a whole new cast of characters in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will get a lesson in this,” USA Today says.

“On the other, that entirely new lineup of characters is evidence of the same. Captain Jack works best alone,” the publication further writes.

USA Today also got the chance to talk a bit with the man of the hour himself, Johnny Depp, who, right now, happens to be promoting another film, “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie.

For starters, the actor says, fans shouldn’t expect Sparrow to have any more depth than he did in the previous 3 films, when his sidekicks included Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom.

“Captain Jack is about as fully realized a human as he can be. He’s there. He’s going to stay there. Which is fine,” Depp says laughing.

Still, the film is different than the previous 3 releases, if only for the fact that now there’s only so few stories to tell because the focus is all on Sparrow.

“What’s most interesting about Pirates 4 is you don’t have to connect the dots for these subplots and sub-characters. It felt like a fresh, clean slate,” the star explains.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is out in 3D on May 20, 2011, with the first official trailer arriving in theaters with “Tron: Legacy” on December 17.
