Microsoft launched the Surface RT in October 2012, and since then many other manufacturers have brought their very own Windows RT and Windows 8 devices to the market, but none has actually managed to overtake the original Surface.

Statistics provided by AdDuplex for the month of September 2014 show that the Surface RT is currently the number one Windows RT/Windows 8 device on the market, with a market share of 9.82 percent.

The updated version, intuitively called Microsoft Surface 2, comes next with 2.41 percent, followed by HP Pavilion 15 and Asus Transformer Book with 2.37 percent and 2.16 percent, respectively.

According to the very same figures, Microsoft Surface Pro, which is actually Redmond’s first tablet in history powered by the full version of Windows 8, has a share of 0.93 percent, while the newly launched Microsoft Surface Pro 3 accounts for 0.92 percent of the Windows 8 market.

The best-selling Surface model ever

Microsoft has already released several other Surface models after the RT, but the original version continues to be the most widespread worldwide.

Statistics indicate that the Surface RT is not only the most popular Windows RT/8 device on the market, but also that it’s the best-selling model of the entire Surface lineup.

Microsoft was often criticized for launching a tablet powered by Windows RT, a stripped-down version of Windows 8 which cannot run desktop applications, but it appears that lots of users actually gave it a shot in the end.

The company obviously tried to boost sales and clear inventories with the help of lots of discounts and promos, so it’s no wonder that the RT continues to be the leading device on the market.

All eyes on the Surface Pro 3

Microsoft, however, hopes that more users will give its new Surface Pro 3 tablet a shot, a device which, according to the company, was designed from the very beginning to replace your laptop.

The company said during the official launch on May 20 that the Surface Pro 3 was the right tablet replacement for the bulky laptop, coming with the best of two worlds and being powered by the full version of Windows 8.1 Pro.

The Surface Pro 3 features a 12-inch display, a two-mode kickstand, and several CPU options, starting with an Intel Core i3 and ending with an i7. There are several storage versions up to 512 GB and two RAM options – 4GB and 8GB.

Pricing appears to be the only major drawback of the Surface Pro 3, as the top-of-the-range configuration can be yours in the United States for $1,949 (approximately 1,500 euro).
