Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace shot “Child 44” sometime in 2013, with buzz around the project picking up long before that, starting with the moment the casting announcement was made. In April 2015, we’re finally going to see the movie, after several unexpected delays.

The first trailer for it is now out, and as usual, embedded in full below.

“Child 44” tells the story of a soldier in Stalin’s Soviet Union, who believes in the law and lives his life according to a very strict set of rules. However, when a friend’s child is murdered and he starts looking into the case that had been billed an accident, he uncovers a dark secret that will get both him and his wife exiled.

The film reunites Hardy with his “The Drop” co-star Rapace, and his “The Dark Knight Rises” co-star Oldman, but also features appearances from Vincent Cassel, Joel Kinnaman and Jason Clarke, and is directed by Daniel Espinosa.

The trailer promises a dark and dangerous ride, but somehow I could not get past the fake accents everyone is using.

I get it that this is an old Hollywood convention, but could we not be made to believe we are watching a story set in Russia without having all these amazing actors do a “Russian speaking English” accent? Do Russian soldiers really talk amongst themselves in heavily accented English?

That’s just a pet peeve of mine, though. Other than that, everything about “Child 44” looks great.
