Sherlock Holmes is increasingly popular these days: we have already had a very successful action franchise with Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, one British show with BBC One’s “Sherlock,” and a US counterpart of sorts with “Elementary,” but demand is still high.

So, in 2015, we’re getting another Sherlock movie, “Mr. Holmes.” This one will star none other than legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen and will introduce us to an old and not quite as brisk detective, played by McKellen.

Above is the first photo of the star in character, released on his Twitter feed. “Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he's 93 years old and it's my turn. #MrHolmes,” he writes in the caption.

So, the story is based on the novel “A Slight Trick of the Mind” by Mitch Cullin and is set in 1974. Mr. Holmes is now old and retired, and can no longer boast of the spectacular memory he had when young.

Still, there’s a 50-year-old case from which he remembers only snippets that come back to haunt him and he’s determined to solve it. It also involves a gorgeous woman.

Laura Linney also stars, while Bill Condon is in the director’s chair. His previous work includes “Dreamgirls,” “Gods and Monsters,” “The Fifth Estate,” and the final two installments of “The Twilight Saga.”
