Angelina Jolie is naked and glistening in the official 'Beowulf' trailer. Only that it's not her and she's not really naked and, to cap it all off, nothing shows save for her legs and tiny waspy waist. It's all in 'Beowulf', director Robert Zemeckis' GCI rendition of the oldest story in the entire English language, whose official trailer has been released. And, by God, it looks great!
Starring Angelina Jolie, Ray Winstone, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright Penn, Crispin Glover and John Malkovich, the movie had from the onset all the star-power and talent any project would need to make it a guaranteed box-office hit. But it took more than just that to make it as appealing as it seems now: it took whole years of pondering over what would be the best way to present a story that is more than known by people of all ages or how to incorporate everything in it. But, above all, it took a long time for the 'Beowulf' screenwriters Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary to come up with the perfect way of translating the story into the poem that will eventually run on the silver screen.
And, believe you me, the trailer promises more than just a mere 'poem': it vouches for a journey into a computer generated world of dark places and golden lights, a zone so sexually charged and threatening that it leaves the viewer wondering whether, in the end, Beowulf will actually make the right choice. Alluring, misleading and yet extremely violent, 'Beowulf' is considered (with good reason, some say) to be this year's biggest hit. With mind-blowing scenes and scenery, great acting on behalf of the entire cast and a plot that will surely captivate the viewers three minutes into the film, this particular movie seems a very inspired combination of 'Lord of the Rings' and '300'.
And, speaking of the trailer,
HERE is where you can see it. You might also notice that Angelina is looking a bit fuller in the face and lips, in particular. And, if you like what you see, here's more: the movie screens in 3D-projection tonight at Comic-Con in San Diego. But, for those who won't get there in time, the wait is rather long: 'Beowulf' has been scheduled for release on the 16th of November 2007. Either way, I say it's worth the wait!
More good news before I let you see the trailer: apparently, the two screenwriters had to go through a lot of pain and effort to render the story so as to get a PG-13 rating from the ever careful and watching MPAA. Therefore, most of the nude and blood-filled scenes have been stylized to the maximum or even completely cut out. However, Gaiman is in for an uncensored and unrated version of the movie, which will probably be made after the release (meaning, it depends on the way 'Beowulf' scores at the box-office) and only after every member of the team is also OK with it. Join me in prayers.
