The sequel to Zach Snyder’s insanely successful “300” is a project that has spent the past couple of years in production limbo. It recently went into production, with the cast gathering for the first official photo.

Called “300: Rise of an Empire,” it won’t be a sequel per se because, as fans of the original film must already know, that would be practically impossible.

Consequently, it features none of the stars who appeared in it, except for Rodrigo Santoro, who will reprise his role as the god-like leader Xerxes.

Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton also star, with Noam Murro in the director’s chair.

“300: Rise of an Empire” will be out in August 2013.
