The Google Chrome development branch, a browser built on the Blink layout engine that aims to be minimalistic and versatile at the same time, has just advanced to version 36 and is now ready for testing.

Google developers have pushed a new build of their Chrome browser out the door and have increased the version number again, this time to 36. It's not something important in the grand scheme of things, but it will be interesting to see where will it end.

Even if the new Google Chrome 36 may look like an appealing choice, you need to keep in mind that this is a development version, which is inherently unstable. Usually, most of the features and new options introduced in the new dev release end up in the Beta branch and then, later, in the Stable. Even so, some features might get ditched along the way, so you mustn't get attached to this particular branch too much.

According to the developers, SSL support has been added to the GN build (this moves the files from the secondary tree to the main one and renames the “meta” one to //crypto:ssl), the “surprise me” wallpaper has been enabled for new profiles, the login-screen and skip-hwid-check have been removed from telemetry, the gfx code has been cleaned up after the GTK port removal, a number of fixes for cross-browser options have been added, and a regression in the keyboard usability experiment mode has been corrected.

Also, a poll method has been added in CriteriaHelper for the UI thread, language code has been added to the Wallet address, a few tab switch metrics have been dropped, base files have been added for the HID detection screen, V8 has been updated to version 3.26.13.1, a “meaning” attribute has been added to the Play store title, unnecessary output spam from Pulse audio has been removed, some fields from about:sync have been removed, and a number of Linux package dependencies have been fixed.

The Google Chrome developers only provide two kinds of binary files, deb and rpm, and no source. If you are not using a Linux distribution capable of reading this type of files, you will have to wait until it hits your repositories.

Usually, a complete list of changes can be found on the official website. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
