Micro SAS solid-state drives were made before, but they were usually shipped on an as-requested basis, not through retail or other channels of the sort.

Now, sTec, Inc. has launched the first generally available Micro SAS SSDs, called s800.

The s800 was actually available before, but it had no Micro SAS members.

Made for blade servers, caching and high-density computing, the new storage devices bring more than fast and durable storage. They also get 256-bit AES-XTS encryption.

Not bad for what are essentially the smallest sort of enterprise-class SAS SSDs.

Sales should be underway in capacities of 200 GB and 400 GB. Pricing will be revealed upon contacting eTec. Read/write speeds weren't specified.

"Our new Micro SAS SSDs are ideal for applications that demand a smaller footprint and power usage," said Zack Mihalis, vice president product marketing and management, sTec.
