The new build is rolling out as part of a soak test

When Google’s latest Android 5.0 Lollipop made a debut into the wild five months ago, Motorola was one of the first device manufacturers to pick up the new build and offer it to its flagship devices.

While some Android users, like Sony Xperia Z owners, are still waiting to be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop, most of Motorola’s smartphones are blissfully running Google’s latest and greatest.

But while the second-gen Moto X and Moto G users are off the hook with updates for the time being, the first-generation Moto X remained stuck on KitKat.

The reason for this remains unknown, but the good news is that Motorola is finally making amends, or is attempting to at least.

Original Moto X is given the Lollipop treatment

Motorola employee Luciano Carvalho took to Google Plus to reveal that select first-generation Moto X handsets are now being updated to Lollipop. If you too are holding on to an original Moto X, then you should expect to see the 5.0.2 build arrive on your handset soon.

Weirdly enough, Motorola hasn’t said anything about the rollout of the Android 5.1 update, which Google has officially introduced last week.

The update brings a bunch of improvements and bug fixes, including support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones. On top of that, there’s the option to join Wi-Fi networks and control paired Bluetooth devices directly from Quick Settings.

Going back to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop being made available for the first-gen Moto X, you should be aware that the rollout is currently part of a soak test, so it is hitting only a few select users.

Once the new build gets the green light from the folks involved in the beta testing, Motorola will make Lollipop available to a wider range of users, starting with carrier unlocked versions and then gradually moving to all versions.

The original Moto X was launched back in August 2013 and arrived with a 4.7-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution (312 ppi) and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Powering the phone is a Qualcomm MSM8960DT Snapdragon S4 Pro processor working in combination with 2GB of RAM and a minimum of 16GB of internal storage.
