Sometimes, having the newest technology is a matter a company should be proud of, but more and more, I've seen well known companies being overtaken by companies less known to the public eye. And even though we all expect big changes to come from Intel, AMD
, NVIDIA, ATI, and so on, every now and again, we have the surprise of seeing a breakthrough such as the first DDR3-1600 JEDEC compliant memory to be available from Inphi Corporation.

Much like NVIDIA, to give a more familiar example, Inphi Corp. is a fabless electronic components company, which produces more than 80 components for different uses, both in the communications market and in the computer industry. In this last field of work, they have produced the first DDR3 register DIMM with the Inphi INSSTE32882 device. This device supports all of the existing DDR3-800, DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333 standards as well as the DDR3-1600 standard proposed for high-end workstations and servers alike.

Mian Quddus, Chairman of the JEDEC Board of Directors and Technical Marketing Director for Samsung Semiconductor Inc., stated that: "Inphi's INSSTE32882 Register Device represents an important first step in preparing the industry for designing platforms requiring DDR3 RDIMM memory in next generation servers. Early availability of these devices ensures that manufacturers will be able to transition smoothly to mass production of next generation servers employing DDR3 memory."

The device itself is manufactured on an 180nm process node, and allows the company to set an aggressive pricing strategy. Current pricing is of $5.80 per unit in 2.000 units shipments. The register device is actually set to perform better than the JEDEC proposed standards, having a propagation delay of 0.7nS, below the 11nS standard.
