Those with access to iPhone software developer builds have posted their first impressions of iOS 4.1, noting both cosmetic changes, and added functionality. Notably, Apple seems to have included the promised signal bar tweak, although users aren’t noticing any improvements in actual signal strength.

Changes spotted by CultOfMac include the visibly improved signal bar graphics, with the site noting that only time will tell whether this is an actual indication of signal strength. However, users of the MacRumors forums seem to indicate nothing has changed as far as reception goes. Other noticeable alterations include a modified Game Center app, the ability to add FaceTime favorites, and the ability to auto-rotate in landscape view when using the Camera app (including camera roll).

Weighing in on the changes in Game Center, Apple's matchmaking and leaderboard social network for iOS games, MacRumors points out that its user interface is dramatically tweaked, compared to the original release. The rumor site also noticed that Flash/Camera buttons reposition themselves in landscape, while Favorites in the Phone app can now be added as Voice or Facetime. Additionally, they also noticed that Check Spelling can now be turned off from the phone’s Settings.

A separate report by the same rumor-focused site acknowledges Apple’s move to include the signal bar changes. The bars appear slightly taller than the previous ones, MacRumors notes, but it is yet unknown whether Apple's calculations regarding signal strength have been revised, the site adds. Another confirmed change is the updated modem firmware which jumped from 01.59.00 to 02.07.01.

iOS 4.1 Beta and SDK 4.1 Beta are available as free downloads for registered Apple Developers. While Apple does not directly specify the purpose of the update, the company is expected to also release an incremental iOS 4.0.1 update for iPhone customers worldwide, addressing said signal bar issues.
