“Caden” will even let you help make the movie set

Have you seen The Boxtrolls? Or Coraline? Both films used 3D printed props and characters extensively, and they allowed for a new level of stop-motion animation.

However, there hasn't been a movie about 3D printing itself, something that is set to change now that the set for Caden has been, well, set.

Although perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself, since the set hasn't really been set yet. The makers of the film have set up an Indiegogo campaign seeking to raise the necessary funds. Also, they are letting you help build that set together with them.

Londoners Amanda Mesaikos and Susanne Aichele of Random Cat Pictures will allow you to download prop models and make them at home, or you could come up with something yourself. Then you can send it back and it might be chosen as a prop that will later be released to everyone else through MyMiniFactory.

The crowdfunding Indiegogo campaign itself will earn you private links to the films, on-screen shout-outs in the credits, and even real movie props, or a signed DVD. You could even get an invitation to a private screening, or your own 3D printed Caleb.

Which brings us to the plot. “Caden” film is about a nine-year-old boy from the year 2044 who decides to 3D print a companion of himself. The body double ends up possessing everything down to his memories.

It's an interesting look into the future, even though it's not very likely that 3D printing will advance that far in real life. We've barely started exploring living tissue printing.
