Firefox versus Internet Explorer

Is the number of flaws a real criterion?

I wonder how many Firefox users have cursed Symantec for their report, which says that Internet Explorer is much safer than their beloved open source browser.

Since Firefox has recorded 90 million downloads, we can only assume that the number was pretty high...

But is the number
of vulnerabilities really a criterion to assess a browser's security? Certainly not, and it would have been a better idea if Symantec had counted the number of exploits for Internet Explorer and Firefox. Not to mention that patching rate has been completely disregarded. As we know, the Firefox patches are released at a much faster rate than Internet Explorer's.

And if you are curious to find out the number of exploits, all you have to do is search on Google the expression 'Exploits for Firefox' and 'Exploits for Internet Explorer'. The first returned 1,520,000 results, while the latter returned 16,700,000 results.

It's true that 60% were (in both cases) news about the vulnerabilities, but, as you can easily see for yourselves, 60% of 1,240,000 is significantly less than 60% of 16,700,000.

Do you still feel like talking about browser security?

Symantec Gives IE a Helping Hand: Firefox Is More Vulnerable Than IE

Is Firefox Safer Than IE?

User opinions:

The Symantec report did not say that Internet Explorer is more secure. It said that there were more new vendor-confirmed vulnerabilities in Firefox than Internet Explorer during that six-month time period. It did not say how many total unfixed vulernabilities existed during that six-month period (and how severe those were), which is what is really important. The Symantec report never claimed that one browser was more safe than another; that was merely an interpretation made by some news sources that didn't read closely enough before posting their articles.

Secunia also came out with the same basic results: there were more new publicly detailed vulnerabilities in Firefox than in Internet Explorer in 2005. However, as you can see here those six months clearly don't give the whole picture. Since Firefox 1.0 was released, there have always been several times more unfixed vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer than in Firefox, and those vulnerabilities have added up to a greater risk than in Firefox. Internet Explorer has also taken several times longer to fix vulnerabilities than Firefox, and they still have high critical and extremely critical vulnerabilities from years ago without complete fixes.

Are you kidding me?

I wish to call for the head of Tudor Raiciu, the editor of this article.

You can't be serious when you tell people to use Google as a gauge for security of one browser over another?

There is a reason why the number is 16mil to 1mil.
Internet Explorer has been around, and mainstream for over 10 years...even during the .com bubble.
FireFox...I think 2.5 years sound about right. 2.5 years brings it to mid-2003, which mind i note, was AFTER the .com bubble.

Also make sure to include the fact that probably half those webpages are just security forums with a bunch of FireFox-iholics just complaining about how IE isn't secure, mentioning such terms as "EXPLOITS".

Google Fight, as its called, is not a good gauge for anything but checking popularity of search terms.

Hmm...I wonder...
3,680,000 versus...70,300,000.

Anyone want to guess what each of those numbers are?

If you said the number of results for "Softpedia" and "Download.com" respectively, you win!

Does that indicate that Download.com is better? No...
SP is much better than Download.com...google numbers don't mean crap.
