The people at Mozilla Labs move fast, it’s the nature of their work. Just one month after Firefox Sync 1.3 came out, Firefox Sync 1.4 lands with several new features and improvements. The biggest updates are to the UI which is getting a revamp in preparation of Firefox 4.0. There is also the possibility to name your computers to make it easier to track and distinguish them. At the same time, the Firefox Home iPhone app, built on Sync technology, has been submitted to the App Store.

“Mozilla is proud to announce the latest release of Firefox Sync is now available for download. This release includes the following main features: It enables you to give friendly names to identify your computers (John’s Work Laptop, Mary’s Home Desktop etc) which is especially useful when you use Firefox Home, our upcoming iPhone app; It includes some major UI changes in preparation for bringing Firefox Sync to Firefox 4; In addition, we also have numerous performance and stability improvements,” Mozilla’s Mike Connor announced.

The UI changes are meant to bring Firefox Sync in line with the new Firefox 4.0 way of thinking. There’s an emphasis on un-cluttering the user interface and to have add-ons behave and look in a comprehensive way. Practically, it means that the status bar icon and UI elements are gone and Firefox Sync 1.4 can only be accessed through the Tools menu.

A new feature is the possibility to name the computers you sync with to make it easier to know which is which. This comes especially handy with the tab sync feature or with the upcoming Firefox Home iPhone app. The app enables you to access your bookmarks, history and opened tabs on the iPhone, useful if you want to pick up where you left off when you’re on the go. Firefox Home has now been submitted for approval in the iTunes App Store.
