Mozilla is announcing that the Weave Sync project has graduated from Mozilla Labs and has been rebranded to make its scope easier to understand to users. Firefox Sync 1.3, along with the name change, comes with a few new features as well. The project is considered complete and stable enough to have it leave the experimental Mozilla Labs. Firefox Sync will be integrated with the next major Firefox release, but users can install the add-on in the meantime.

“We are excited to announce that the ‘Weave Sync’ project from Mozilla Labs has officially graduated and is now being incorporated into the Firefox roadmap. ‘Weave Sync’ is now named ‘Firefox Sync’ and the service will become a feature of Firefox in an upcoming major release,” Mozilla Labs’ Ragavan Srinivasan announced.

“For those of you that tested Sync and gave feedback while it was a part of Mozilla Labs, thank you, this would not have happened without you. And even though this project has graduated, we are still looking for your feedback and involvement as we incorporate Sync into Firefox,” he added.

Firefox Sync 1.3 is now considered complete after many months in development. The tool went through several revamps with a focus on usability and on integrating the new features added over time. The latest version has been translated into 15 languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese.

Firefox Sync 1.3 also comes with a revamped sign-up and setup process to make it faster and easier for new users to pick up. It also features a fresh button to access all remote tabs.

With Firefox Sync, users can synchronize their bookmarks, preferences and opened tabs between different Firefox installs. It also syncs with the Firefox Mobile browser. For users who need to work on several machines and devices, it’s the perfect tool.

The feature will be integrated into the next Firefox major release. Firefox 4.0 is scheduled for the end of the year and will most likely land sometime in 2011. Mozilla will start integrating new features in ‘point’ releases of Firefox, like the out-of-process feature in Firefox 3.6.4, so it may do the same for Firefox Sync as well.
