Mozilla assured as early as the past week that the first security and stability update for Firefox 3.0 would be available for download on July 16, and it looks like it lived up to its promise. Although official confirmation has yet to be made available, Firefox 3.0.1 is already up for grabs, one day following the release of Firefox 2.0.0.16, and almost one month since Firefox 3.0 went live and reached the 8 million downloads milestone in
the first 24 hours. Version 3.0.1 is the step Mozilla takes toward focusing exclusively on Firefox 3.0.

Firefox 3.0.1 is designed to fix two security vulnerabilities, both labeled with a maximum severity rating of critical. Not through a coincidence, the pair of security flaws are the very same that Mozilla patched on July 15 in Firefox 2.0.0.16.

The first issue deals with a "remote code execution by overflowing CSS reference counter". According to Mozilla, "The vulnerability was caused by an insufficiently sized variable being used as a reference counter for CSS objects. By creating a very large number of references to a common CSS object, this counter could be overflowed which could cause a crash when the browser attempts to free the CSS object while still in use. An attacker could use this crash to run arbitrary code on the victim's computer."

The second security hole plugged with the release of Firefox 3.0.1 involves "command-line URLs launch multiple tabs when Firefox not running". Mozilla revealed that despite the Critical rating, this vulnerability is mitigated by limited privileges. However, in combination with a script injecting flaw, the vulnerability can permit an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Nothing is set in stone at this point in time, but with Mozilla' looking to phase out support for Firefox 2.0 by mid-December 2008, Firefox 3.0.1 is considered as a candidate for a major update rollout. In this context, Firefox 3.0.1 might be the version of the open source browser that will get pushed to all users of Firefox 2.0 automatically. "Firefox 2.0.0.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until mid-December, 2008. All users are encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 3," said Samuel Sidler, Quality Assurance Engineer at Mozilla.

On FireFox 3.03 (vs. Opera 9.5):

First the bad bits in FireFox...
~ COLOR CUSTOMIZING is untweakable [their color chips only]. If it's important to you, go to Opera [but beware: its is buggy and complex].
~ "UNDELETE LAST CLOSED TAB" should be built-in, rather than a crash-losable and probably destabilizing/slowing extension.
~ GO BACK ONE PAGE is hit and miss [but is so on other browsers too].
~ ERRATIC FLASH SUPPORT. If it works for you, congrats. For many, like me, it comes and goes, like Quicktime and Javascript.
~NO SEARCH-BOOKMARKS SHORTCUT. [Doh!]
~ SCROLLING IS JERKY so needs smoothing available only thru extensions that may slow and destabilize.
~ NO USER-SETTABLE WALLPAPER [Even just a few paper textures would be nice. Any extension writers out there listening? And why no drop-shadows on tap [for text or images]? Text Shadow extension was promisng but did nada. However, these are feature requests, not beefs; i digress.
~ FLASH [etc.] VIDEOS DOWNLOADS require extensions, which slow and destabilize FF. Ironic: Flash plays more consistently in Opera, but saves better in FireFox.
~ BULK DOWNLOADS REQUIRE DOWNTHEMALL, another! extension. P.S: it can forget its target directory, requiring re-input, making Opera's native Shift+Control+L >select files > right click > save to download folder slightly preferable.
~ CHANGE DEFAULT SEARCH ENGINE applies only to Mozilla's "B-List". If your engine isn't there, tough.
~ NO ZOOM-TO-FIT like Opera. But that's a quibble really, given XP's cntrl+mouse wheel command.
~ BOOKMARK MANGER IS INDUSTRY [SUB-] STANDARD [when oh when will somebody deliver a drag n' drop interface so one can simply drag unsorted bookmarks into different folders!? Any developers listening?].
~ ITS DEPENDENCE ON EXTENSIONS MAKES IT AN EASIER TARGET FOR MALWARE. So Opera is safer.
~ ITS DEPENDENCE ON EXTENSIONS PRODUCES CONFLICTS BETWEEN THEM. I.e. NoScript blocks Flash.
~IT'S KLUNKY. Yes, this is subjective but here's a concrete example. Its scroll bars are fixed and enlarge with any page zoom. Operas are narrower, don't enlarge with page zoom, and even disappear in full-screen mode. Nice.
Opera may be a bit on the tofu mimimalism side but is so sleekly responsive that it feels faster [and benchmarks be damned].
~ WORST OF ALL: probably due to extensions, it can be ruinously unstable.

OPERA: slightly better security, sleekness [thinner and hideable scrollbars, zoom-to-fit etc.], and better [if harder] color-customizing.
FIREFOX: doesn't scramble pages, d/l's Flash, doesn't load pages jerkily as Opera [what were they thinking!?], has great developer momentum, more extensions, its "Web Archives" actually work, and has XP's ALT+Tab'ing as Ctrl+Tab'ing!

CONCLUSION: If FireFox is stable for you, go for it because capable beats pretty. And Mozilla will get around to improving its looks, I hope....
