Mozilla has uploaded the installer for the stable version of Firefox 19 on their servers, for all supported platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux).

The big news for Firefox 19 is the introduction of a more secure PDF viewer (based on JavaScript and HTML5) that started from a research project called PDF.js.

This is designed to make the browser more secure, since it eliminates the need for third-party components that often come with proprietary source code Mozilla has no control over, and which could pose security risks.

PDF.js did not create any problems during the six beta releases for Firefox 19 but should something happen on its account, Mozilla has already prepared an add-on hotfix to disable the component.

Important to note is that, when PDF.js is disabled, the previous PDF plug-ins become re-enabled. The hotfix affects only the release channel.

For Windows, there is also a stub-installer available, which downloads the necessary files over a secure connection.

You betcha. Given the sterling QC and exemplary security bugfix record for Mozilla code, I feel MUCH more secure already. NOT. I mean, are we really supposed to believe that there are NO bugs in the PDF.js code, or the underlying HTML5 implementation?! The old saying: "out of the frying pan and into the fire" seems appropriate in this context.

The improvement consists in the fact that security flaws in the PDF viewer can be addressed and rolled out to the users quicker by Mozilla rather than rely on third party devs to make the necessary patch.
