Firefly could be the next social phenomenon if adopted in mass

The movie “TiMER,”  launched back in 2009 starring Emma Caulfield, highlights one of the most basic human fears: going through life without meeting your “soul mate.”

In the film, inhabitants of a futuristic Planet Earth are given the choice of wearing a clock that counts down the moment when they meet their soul mate. And if this scenario might seem Sci-Fi to you, this new Kickstarter project might really take you by surprise.

What if you had a bracelet that would instantly light up when somebody that you might be compatible with is nearby?

Of course, they would have to be wearing the wrist-band themselves for the cycle to be complete, but think about it. How many of us would like to abolish blind-dating or the hassle of spending months with somebody just to discover you have nothing in common?

The Firefly project is currently up on Kickstarter and, by October 2014, the team behind it hopes to be releasing the product to the masses.

The Firefly charm is a smart bracelet that connects to your phone via Bluetooth BLE 4.0. When you receive a notification, the device will automatically light up like a Firefly. The wearable is capable of connecting with Facebook and, of course, other Fiery users.

Imagine the following scenario, you’re in crowded place like a club for example, and you’re wristband starts fluttering. This means Firefly has identified another wristband wearer and wants to connect with the person.

So you’ll be handed their Facebook profile up front and other personal information the wearer choose to share. Furthermore, you can filter the people your Firefly lights up for, by setting the device to shine only if it encounters a person that shares your interests.

The band also has another use. Suppose you have been talking to a business associate you have never seen in your life before but you finally decide to meet up. Imagine walking in a hotel lounge looking for the person you’re supposed to meet.

Firefly will light up when you find the right person, making it easier for you to navigate in the sea of social situations.

Firefly also comes complete with Nightlight feature that allows you to read notifications and such even in dim light conditions. Of course, Firefly connects to your Android or iOS smartphone and can notify you when your handset is out of range.

Surely, the concept sounds interesting, but for it to actually work in the real world, it implies that most of us become Firefly adopters. Otherwise, it would be no point in you being the sole person wearing such a wristband in a club or dinner party.
