Firefall developer Red 5 Studios’ parent company just got $23 / €17 million in funding, which translates into more resources for the MMO shooter.

Firefall is a massively multiplayer online first person shooter with role-playing elements, set in a unique science fiction universe, that was initially scheduled to launch in 2011, and is currently in an open beta state.

The game is set 200 years in the future, when a near-Earth object is attracted into the Moon’s gravity well and shatters, then plummeting into Earth, throwing mankind into an era of chaos known as the Nine Year Winter.

Humanity is then restored, once scientists find a new element in the debris the asteroid left in its wake, and intrepid explorers set out to Alpha Centauri, seeking to find more of the mysterious element.

Red 5 Studios has announced that the game was greatly improved during the course of 2013, and the team is hard at work implementing the planned features and creating high quality content.

Players will be able to fight and push back the Melding, the terrible energy storm attacking Earth, and ultimately engage the mysterious alien race, the Chosen.

The developer plans to release a new story based campaign, that will introduce new characters and will begin to unveil the secrets behind the events in the game so far.

The official Red 5 Studios statement also states that open-world PvP action will also be introduced later in the year, where whole armies will fight for control over the new areas revealed within the Melding.

“This additional round of funding will offer us the means to execute on our plan for successfully launching Firefall in 2014.” said James Macauley, acting CEO of Red 5 Studio.
