14 DAY TRIAL // AMD tried its hand at supercomputing GPU accelerators with the FireStream line a while ago, but little came of it, mostly because NVIDIA's Tesla stole the show. Now, it's trying again.
This time, however, AMD is going with its other professional brand, FirePro, the one normally reserved for workstation and professional graphics cards.
The new accelerator is called AMD FirePro S10000 12 GB Edition and uses ECC memory on the PCI Express 3.0 interface.
The GPU is, obviously, based on the latest GCN architecture (GraphicsCore Next).
So, saying that this is the “first” supercomputing graphics card is kind of a stretch, but it's also true that the GPU accelerators usually lack video outputs, which is not the case here (there's DVI and HDMI).
Thus, it should be good for virtualization/visualization servers, and various workstations, not just high-performance computing (HPC) workloads (although single precision and double precision performance is high).
