An investigation of the point-of-sale (PoS) terminals at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Emmett Charter Township, Michigan, is underway, trying to determine if information has been stolen from customers’ payment cards.

The inquiry was initiated after guests at the establishment expressed concerns regarding their financial account records following visits at FireKeepers Casino Hotel.

Security forensic experts try to determine if there is reason for concern

The company announced in an official statement on Wednesday that the PoS systems believed to be affected had already been replaced at the casino, hotel and any restaurants or stores present on the property of FireKeepers Casino Hotel.

At the moment, there is little information available and new details are expected to emerge after the security forensic experts complete their assessment.

Law enforcement has been notified and is currently involved in the investigation, receiving the full cooperation of the potentially affected parties.

FireKeepers informs that individuals who used their cards for online payments at the company’s website are not impacted in any way because a separate system is used for processing orders.

The same applies for the ATMs on the premises, which are connected to a different payment card processing system.

Customers advised to monitor bank account statements

If malicious software is found on the PoS terminals, the type of information exposed can include full names, card number and expiration date. In this case, FireKeepers says that it will not be able to contact the affected people because there isn’t sufficient information for carrying out this task.

Until new details appear, individuals that visited the FireKeepers complex are advised to keep an eye on their credit and debit card statements for irregular activities.

Also, depending on the type of information exposed, the company may offer complimentary credit monitoring or identity protection services.

The company issued an apology in advance about any inconvenience or concern the potential incident may have caused to its customers. “Be assured that we place a top priority on protecting the security of our customers’ personal information,” the statement informs.
