Minimo, the Mozilla browser for mobile devices, is determined to "spread" from Linux PDAs and onto Windows CE devices, according to the Mozilla Foundation.
The available version of the Minimo browser is only Linux-based PDA compatible, but a future version will debut this summer on Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, which is used on
a variety of Pocket PCs and smart phones.
Doug Turner, the number one Minimo developer, posted the first development build of Minimo for Pocket PC 2003--which is based on Windows CE--on a Web site last week.
A more stable version is expected to be ready later in the year, maybe in four months time. Minimo developers have already completed basic work on the project, but they are looking for extra developers to work on improving the user interface, Turner said on the MozillaZine news site.
The Minimo (Mini Mozilla) project is focused on code-size and runtime footprint reduction, and porting to small consumer devices. The Mozilla Foundation is hoping to push the browser to all small devices or systems running on limited resources.
The same browser you are used to running on your desktop and laptop will be available in a slimmed down form on your palmtop, but it will have full support for accessing the variety of content you are used to viewing.
The primary focus of Minimo to date has been system with ~32-64 MB of RAM, running Linux and using the GTK toolkit.
