FireEye is adding FireEye Mobile Security to its Mobile Threat Prevention (MTP) platform. FireEye Mobile Security is an Android app that will make it easier for IT administrators and employees to identify mobile threats.

FireEye’s MTP platform provides organizations with mobile malware detection and prevention capabilities. With the introduction of the Android app, existing mobile device management tools are complemented by adding dynamic, malware-related security to mobile devices.

Devices running on the Android platform will benefit from the FireEye Multi-vector Virtual Execution engine technology and FireEye Dynamic Threat Intelligence.

By having access to Dynamic Threat Intelligence, organizations can evaluate apps against over 2 million pre-analyzed applications from Google Play and third-party websites. The information includes threat scores and behavioral details.

The Android app is designed to perform an analysis of user programs in the cloud, but sensitive employee information is left on premises.

“Mobile security, like advanced persistent threat attacks, is a top security issue in enterprise today, yet it has largely relied on traditional defenses,” said Manish Gupta, senior vice president of products at FireEye.

“With almost half of the global workforce believed to be using their personal phone for work, the expanded Mobile Threat Prevention platform makes it easy for enterprises to guard their data from mobile threats using the advanced protection FireEye is known for,” Gupta added.

The existing management tools and the new app enable customers of the FireEye MTP platform to identify mobile threats in real time by leveraging behavioral analysis. The platform can also block malicious applications, and alert users and administrators when suspicious apps are detected.

Granular visibility is provided into compromised devices. Furthermore, users can choose from a number of enforcement options, like blocking malicious applications from running.

The FireEye Mobile Security app will become generally available by the end of June this year.

A new report published by F-Secure has revealed that Android continues to be the most targeted mobile operating system. The figures show that of the 277 new malware families identified by the security firm, 275 are designed to target Android smartphones.

As Android malware continues to evolve, organizations need to ensure that their systems are protected against threats that leverage this attack vector. We’re witnessing a rise in the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend, and enterprises must not neglect mobile security if they want to keep valuable corporate data out of the hands of cybercriminals.
