The game will begin offering downloadable content in March

Nintendo introduced the possibility for developers and publishers of 3DS games to offer downloadable content for their titles, and it seems that the upcoming Fire Emblem title for the handheld device will be the first to take advantage of this system.

While downloadable content and add-ons have flourished on platforms like the PC, PS3 or Xbox 360, Nintendo’s own devices, like the Wii or DS, didn’t allow for such strategies. This changed with the 3DS, which recently got a software update that allows developers to deliver content through the online eShop.

Now, after we heard a reassuring statement from Nintendo saying that this won’t lead to 3DS game developers taking advantage of the system to charge lots of money for DLC, details about the first actual game to use the system have appeared, via Kotaku.

According to the website, the upcoming Fire Emblem role-playing game will offer downloadable content that will be delivered through the eShop in March, when the title is expected to appear for the 3DS.

No word on just what this DLC might be, but you can expect it to include things like better gear, enhanced abilities or items that will help you progress through the game. Expect more details early next year.
