The development team at Firaxis has offered some information on the look of the upcoming XCOM: Enemy Unknown strategy game, showing how older video games and cartoons have influenced the characters’ design of.

Greg Foertsch, who is the art director working on the game, says that he wants to make the characters look more like heroic action figures than real world soldiers, in order to suggest the heroism they are capable of when stopping the alien invasion and create an emotional connection with the player.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown plans to use the same mechanics as the original strategy game from the ‘90’s, while upgrading the look of the game and offering a more complex set of choices for the gamer.

Firaxis says that the PC version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the core one and that it also plans to adapt the experience for gaming consoles, with the launch set to take place late during 2012.
