The development team at Firaxis working on the recently revealed Civilization: Beyond Earth, says that one of the features of the game that will see a lot of changes is the way technology works, with gamers able to get more variety, but also encouraged to focus their efforts more towards one goal.

Dennis Shirk, a lead producer on the turn-based strategy title, tells Gamespot that the team will introduce branch technologies, which are major breakthroughs that will determine how each faction approaches its future.

At the same time, Civilization: Beyond Earth will have smaller leaf tech that is associated with an affinity that allows each player to specialize his efforts.

Shirk states, “Gaining allegiance to an affinity begins the path towards a technology victory specific to that affinity. At no time are you ever locked out of researching any technology, but it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to research everything in the game.”

Basically, the tech progression for each game will tell a story of how the player chose to approach the game and the new system will also add more replayability to the experience because there are multiple ways to customize a faction.

Civilization: Beyond Earth will be launched on the PC before the end of the year.
