Fiorentina is not the same team that was cruising through the Italian League last season. Moreover, the Florence team has to recover from that 19-points penalty (16, after their win at Parma last mid-week) in the match-fixing scandal. And they had another chance to shorten than penalty yesterday night, when Fiorentina traveled to Udinese.

Still, Stadio Friulli proved to be pretty tough for the visitors. The home side entered the game very determined and tried to get the opener until halftime. But Fiorentina didn't just sit and wait. The visitors pressured De Sanctis' post in the first 45 minutes and it seemed that the match will be a tensioned one.

Just before halftime, though, Udinese got the opener (and the winner). Ghana's Gyan Asamoah crossed brilliantly for Italian international Vincenzo Iaquinta and the Udine striker beat Sebastian Frey with a powerful header. The score was 1-0 and Fiorentina entered halftime with a bigger burden on their shoulder.

The second half saw a much more determined Viola team. Liverani was thrown into play and the former Lazio midfielder started to dictate the game at midfield. He set up great scoring chances for Mutu, Reginaldo, Donadel and Luca Toni, but they all failed to prevail in front of Morgan de Sanctis.

The Udine goalie saved some incredible shots in the second half and it was probably the main reason why Fiorentina failed to get at least the equalizer. Romanian striker Adrian Mutu was, by far, the most dangerous striker for the visitors, having the greatest scoring chance late in the second half.

Mutu greatly headed a corner kick, but De Sanctis pulled off an amazing save and kept the score 1-0. It was practically Fiorentina's last great chance of making it even on the scoreboard. Udinese climbed the Italian League standings all the way into the 6th place, while Fiorentina stays bottom on the table, -16 points in hand.

Here was the action inside Italy last weekend:

Livorno - Milan 0-0
Catania - Messina 2-2
Reggina - Torino 1-1
Siena - Cagliari 0-0
Parma - Roma 0-4
Lazio - Atalanta 1-0
Inter Milan - Chievo 4-3
Empoli - Palermo 2-0
Ascoli - Sampdoria 1-1
Udinese - Fiorentina 1-0

Serie A Standings:

1. Inter Milan - 10p
2. AS Roma - 9p
3. Palermo - 9p
4. Messina - 8p
5. Empoli - 8p
6. Udinese - 7p
