A few hours ago, Ryan Finnie proudly announced the immediate availability for download of the Finnix 100 Linux-based operating system, after a little more than one year of development.

Dubbed Oconto, Finnix 100 drops support for the PowerPC (PPC) architecture, and it's powered by a Debian-based Linux kernel 2.6.32. Many applications were updated, and lots of bugs were fixed in the new release.

"Finnix 100 comes over a year since its previous release, Finnix 93.0, and introduces a new version scheme, with future versions incrementing numerically. Finnix 100 includes updated upstream Debian software, and Linux kernel 2.6.32."

"PowerPC support has been officially dropped, though future PowerPC releases may be made on a one-off basis. The last PowerPC release, Finnix 93.0, will continue to be distributed through finnix.org and should continue to be useful for some time." - said Ryan Finnie in the official release announcement.

Highlights of Finnix 100:

· Linux kernel 2.6.32 (Debian 2.6.32-26); · Memtest86+ was updated to version 4.10; · External device mount point was changed from /mnt to /media; · Network module dependencies can now be included when netboot initrd is generated; · finnix-thumbdrive was removed; · unionfs2 union filesystem was replaced with aufs, which is now included in Debian kernels; · Compressed root filesystem (e.g. /FINNIX directory) can now be placed inside initrd; · The countdown of the reboot and shutdown can now be skipped if you press the Enter key; · The default DNS servers were changed from defunct provider to Google Public DN.

The finnix-thumbdrive tool has been removed in the Finnix 100 release, and the developer recommends using the popular UNetbootin application to write the ISO image and make a bootable USB drive.

"The Finnix store has been discontinued, and in its place is a free sticker service. High quality vinyl stickers can be obtained by sending a donation to Finnix, sending a self-addressed stamped envelope, or sending trinkets."

"With the release of Finnix 100, Finnix will be using simple incrementing versions for future versions (101, 102, etc), rather than a major/minor version scheme." - said Ryan Finnie, Finnix developer. About Finnix:

Finnix is a bootable Linux distribution for system administrators. You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, recover data from them, probe networks, install other operating systems, and much more.

Above all, Finnix is small; currently the entire distribution fits on a mini-CD. Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user and does not include any graphical desktops, office tools or sound support, in order to keep distribution size low.
