In cyber as in physical warfare, the best defence is a good offence

Finland joins the countries which plan to use a strong offensive to enhance the protective measures that guard their data networks.

According to Helsingin Sanomat, Finnish officials believe that if they want to properly defend their data structures they will have to develop a form of response that's shaped as a piece of malware.

"Attack is an unfortunate word, but there can be no defensive capability without the ability to offer a counter-punch. The two things go hand in hand", said Lt. Gen. Arto Räty, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence.

A national cybersecurity strategy is underway and Räty is confident that such plans will be taken into consideration.

Erka Koivunen, the Head of CERT-FI, the national Computer Emergency Response Team at the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, believes that even though the subject is sort of taboo, attack techniques can be useful even for civilian companies, if not for an attack then for properly testing their network's defence systems.
