The Internet is always active and huge amounts of content are making their way online

The Internet is alive and there’s no better way to see this but through a really cool live-updating infographic, such as the one built by Frontrange.

The project hasn’t been online for very long, but it works on a pretty simple principle – mix up pretty graphics, add in some cool statistics about the Internet and constantly update the data.

The Frontrange project uses over 20 sources to put together all the data and it promises to update everything as new information is made public. However, based on some simple math, the tool makes some predictions about how much information is transferred across the Internet each second, for instance, and keeps everything up to date until the next batch is made available.

Talking of which, the infographic estimates that some 7.79 TB of data is being transferred across the Internet in a single second. For comparison, the company says, if one byte was equal to a single gallon of water, the amount of information transferred across the Internet each second could fill the Pacific Ocean in 122 days.

Furthermore, if you were curious, there are about 1.6 new websites created every second and over 5,100 WordPress blogs. Frontrange estimates that each day, WordPress visitors read content equal to over 6.6 million novels, taking into account the average blog post length and the minimum word count of a novel.

On that note, content that could fit into 18,144 novels is produced and published each day on WordPress, which is extremely impressive. Of course, it should be noted that WordPress is the world’s most popular blogging platform.

When it comes to webmail spam, the infographic states that some 1.3 million such emails are being sent every second, which explains why you’re always emptying the spam box of your account.

SoundCloud, an audio platform that enables music creators to upload, record, promote and share their originally created sounds, is also taken into consideration by Frontrange. According to the graphic, some 10 hours’ worth of music is being uploaded to the service each minute.

Social media has been, from the start, one of the main places where people share photographs. For instance, Pinterest sees some 58 pins every second, while Facebook gets over 4,000 new pictures in the same time-frame.

Since “selfie” was last year’s word, it should also be noted that in the UK alone, 13.5 selfies get posted each second.

Also, each second, Reddit gets 8 new comments, Wikipedia one edit and Flickr 486 new pictures.

While these may just seem like numbers, there’s more behind them, something that’s easy to see, namely just how active the Internet is and how much data is being added and transferred at any given time. The numbers are ever-changing, as is the Internet that we all use so much.

As tech companies put in an effort to make sure the number of people with Internet access grows, the content shared online will certainly grow as well.
