Minutes ago, Apple confirmed the release of a free Find My iPhone service for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users via its free iOS application with the same name. Customers are not required to have a MobileMe subscription to employ the service, while the Find My iPhone mobile app is immediately available for download on the App Store.

Apple today launched iOS 4.2, a highly anticipated and major software update for iDevice owners worldwide.

The software is specifically aimed at the iPad, but it does add a few neat extras on iPhone and iPod touch devices as well.

Apple used today’s announcement to also confirm that its Find My iPhone feature, previously available only via a MobileMe subscription, is now a free service to users of an iPhone 4, iPad, or a new-generation iPod touch (4th generation).

“The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe subscription and helps you locate your missing device,” Apple states.

“The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy,” the company explains.

“The iOS 4.2 update is available today to download to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch by syncing the device with iTunes 10.1,” Apple said. The software update is expected to arrive momentarily.

The new version of Apple’s mobile OS is compatible with iPad, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, second and third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) and new iPod touch.

Certain features are not be available on some devices all products. Multitasking, for example, requires iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) or later, according to the Cupertino, California-based electronics giant.
