Find My Friends, a new service from Apple that allows you to see where your friends and family are anytime, has been released as a native iOS application on iTunes.

Requiring iOS 5.0 or later, “Find My Friends allows you to easily locate your friends and family from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.”

According to the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, the free app allows you to send a request to see a friend’s location and, once the friend accepts, you’ll be able to pinpoint his / her exact location (screenshot available to the left):

“Install this free app on your iOS 5 device and sign in with the Apple ID you use with iCloud. Adding a friend is easy – just send a request to see their location. Once your friend accepts using the Find My Friends app, you will then be able to see that friend’s location on a map,” Apple explains.

Users can also opt for sharing their location only for a limited time period with a group of friends.

Apple offers a comprehensive example of how the tool can be put to good use, suggesting that users employ Find My Friends to keep track of their traveling companions when on vacation.

“Or to see if the kids are home from school. Or to find the friends you’re meeting for dinner,” other examples go.

Find My Friends requires not only iOS 5, but also iCloud. Users can create a free iCloud account as soon as today.

As far as hardware requirements are concerned, any iDevice supporting iOS 5 is compatible. Use the link below to download the free app right now. iOS 5 should be made available for download later today.

It looks like you can only use one device per account. So no way to use this for all iPhones in your family if they share account (like most families do, I think).
