If you're in for some good, clean fun, then you're in for a bit of a treat this weekend: Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" has just been launched, and it's a treat for anyone who doesn't expect anything more than a few laughs and an overall pleasant atmosphere. Bee Movie takes us all into a comical world the creators have exclusively devised for the bees, populated by the black-and-yellow insects who possess a series of uncanny abilities and can use their antennae as cell phones, speak and even drive cars. It's a hilarious tale about teenage rebellion, friendship and self-discovery sprinkled with just about every insect cliché imaginable, cleverly turned into a gag that will leave you panting for breath.
Bee world doesn't doesn't seem like much fun to begin with: you are born, grow a little, attend school for three days, and then go to work for the rest of your life. "Are you going to work us to death?" the protagonist of the movie asks in Jerry Seinfeld's voice, as he is being given a drive-through tour of the honey factory Honex.. "We certainly hope so!" says the smiling lecturer, to appreciative chuckles all around.
Everybody, meet Barry B. Benson (voiced by Seinfeld) - a bee with an attitude, a rebel who wants to experience the world and learn a little bit more about what's going on out there before settling down to a lifetime job. Barry decides to take his life into his own hands, sneaks into a formation of pollinators, flies out of the hive, experiences a hilarious flight through central park Central Park, and ends up falling for a human named Vanessa (voiced by Renee Zellweger). And if you think that's funny (well, maybe a little over-the-top but funny, nevertheless) Barry ends up discovering that humans actually sell honey - and ends up suing the human race.
It's not the best animation film you've ever seen, but it manages to get you laughing. Don't expect the humor to be extremely refined - nothing along the lines of the Ice Age series or even the "Shreck" saga. Bee Movie is kid-friendly and the animation is truly stunning, from the cartoon movements and facial expressions of the characters, to the nearly flawless reflections and refractions of the inanimate objects and background environments. So enjoy the clean fun - and I'm sure this movie will make for an evening with a buzz.
