Square Enix revealed the new race that will be introduced in the upcoming Heavensward expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the Au Ra.

The reveal was made during the opening keynote of the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn fanfest, showing that the upcoming race will have partly scaled bodies and will feature some menacing horns.

You can see some of the concept art shown during the event, as well as in-game screenshots of the new race, in the gallery below.

Square Enix has done wonders for the game since its initial, disastrous release. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game was a flop, which the company rebuilt from the ground up and launched to great success.

Ever since, the developer has been steadily adding fresh content to the game and improving the user experience for its fans, and the upcoming Heavensward expansion is set to introduce a new race and two new classes for gamers to enjoy.

The game is currently available on PC, PlayStation 3, and was also launched on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system from Sony earlier this year.

More information from the fanfest

The upcoming expansion will introduce the Machinist and the Astrologian classes. Machinists are a new ranged damage dealing class, functioning like an engineer, with a play style based on laying down turrets, introducing a completely new way to play the game.

The Astrologian class is a new type of healer, using cards from their decks to buff allies and to reduce the combat prowess of enemies. The class harnesses the power of the stars, and is the healing and support class that the team has promised for a long time.

Yugiri, who will be removing her mask and revealing her face in the upcoming Patch 2.5, is a member of the Au Ru race, as GamerEscape informs.

The dragonesque race hails from the continent of Othard. The males are big and burly, and the females are mysterious and elegant.

The update will also introduce a new high-end raid for gamers to delve into, Alexander, a huge mechanical fortress, long-abandoned.

The fortress has since been invaded by Goblins and will feature two modes, Normal and Hard, meant to offer both newcomers to raiding and hardcore gamers a satisfying experience.

Heavensward will also introduce a brand new main theme, composed by none other than Nobuo Uematsu, the famed creator of Final Fantasy soundtracks.
