Square Enix is preparing to roll out the Early Access on the PlayStation 4 version of its massively multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, marking the first of many weekends of fun adventures and fierce combat in Eorzea.

Additionally, those of you who have already been playing the game on your PlayStation 3 now have the opportunity to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version free of charge, but be warned that the transfer is irreversible and it will prevent you from playing on the PS3 in the future, at least without getting another copy of the game.

If you're wondering just how you can upgrade your measly PS3 version to enjoy the fantastic experience on your next-gen console, the answer couldn't be easier. Well, it could actually, but the PlayStation Blog has outlined the steps you have to take so that you don't get lost.

Getting the promotion code

First of all, some preliminary steps. The upgrade is completely free, and will be available from today until at least the end of the year. Make sure that you have logged in on your PlayStation 3 version of the game at least once before attempting to upgrade, in order to make sure that it is correctly registered on the Square Enix systems.

Now, let's get to work. Log into the Mog Station, the management page for all Final Fantasy XIV related services, using your Square Enix account, head on over to the Account Services page and then select the Service Account that you want to upgrade.

Once that is done, you should see a banner offering you the option to upgrade your client from the PlayStation 3 version to the PlayStation 4 one. After you click on it, you'll be presented with the details of the Upgrade Campaign, basically a wall of text, but with a lot of information about the upgrade.

After you hit "Next," you'll get to a page asking you to confirm your update. If you have more than one service account, make sure you have selected the one you want to upgrade, and when everything is in order, click on the "Upgrade" button and you're done, you'll be given a Promotion Code to download the game from PSN.

Getting the game from the PlayStation Store

If you have already participated in the second of the PlayStation 4 beta sessions, the one that took place from April 4 through April 7, then you can skip the next steps, as you already have the game client installed and you only need to update it.

Boot up your PlayStation 4, log in to your Sony Entertainment Network Account and go into the PlayStation Store. Make sure that you have the correct PlayStation profile active before entering the store, for promotion codes can only be redeemed a single time, and you don't want to use yours on the wrong account.

Next, select "Redeem Codes" from the option menu at the bottom left of the screen and enter the promotion code obtained beforehand. Once you've done so and have confirmed all the regulations, you are free to start the download.

Should anything go wrong with the download, you can always restart it using the "Library" option in the PlayStation Store menu.

And that' pretty much it, time to ride a Chocobo in 1080p!

(Also note that the 30 days free subscription is activated when you enter the game registration code that comes with the game on April 14, so if you get yours earlier, hold off registering it before Monday.)
