Square Enix could be the first Japanese publisher that shows real interest towards porting games for Linux users

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is one of the first games from Square Enix that might get a Linux release or at least this is what we can see on Steam database, which shows some signs of it in the Linux repos.

Square Enix is a publisher from Japan and until now it has only shown interest for the Mac OS X platform. The Linux platform has been ignored until now and there is no indication that the games are being ported by the usual suspects, which are Feral Interactive or Aspyr Media. In any case, there is hope to see Final Fantasy XIII-2 on Linux and it all has to do with the first game in the series.

Final Fantasy XIII was released on the Windows platform in October, 2014, and soon after that a Reddit user reported seeing the game listed in the Linux category, on the Steam client.

It was quickly removed, but the community is still hoping that it wasn't just a simple mistaken category. Now, the fact that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is showing up in Steam database is actually further proof that the first game might also get a release.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 was just released for Windows users

Just a couple of months after the first game in the series, Final Fantasy XIII-2 was also made available on Windows, but this time Linux is mentioned in the OS list. This is usually the first step for games that are being actively ported and that might have an ongoing closed Beta.

The information about the Linux release is taken from the Steam database, and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam Database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service. From time to time, games are mistakenly shared on the Linux platform, but that's very rare.

Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch, but sometime it can also take months until a port is ready to ship. The point is that it's a good indication, but users need to take it with a grain of salt.

"FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 is created with the aim of surpassing the quality of its predecessor in every way, featuring new gameplay systems and cutting-edge visuals and audio. In this game the player has the freedom to choose from a range of possibilities and paths; where their choices affect not only the immediate environment, but even shape time and space!" is noted in the Steam entry.

We'll keep you apprised of any developments.
