Developer and publisher Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII will be released on Steam for PC on October 9, and that the two subsequent installments in the mini-series will also come to PC at a later date.

There were some rumors of this a while back, when some Steam logos made their way to Square Enix's official website, but the news is finally official now.

The company has mentioned that Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will also be released on Steam during the spring of 2015, but for the time being the exact launch dates have to be confirmed.

In any case, Final Fantasy XIII is already available for pre-order on Steam, at a slight discount from its usual retail price. The game introduces a lot of new elements to the classic role-playing formula of the long-standing series, and includes fast-paced real-time combat.

The three games are part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mini-series, which also includes Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Agito, and the upcoming Final Fantasy XV, rumored to be headed to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles sometime next year, under the direction of Hajime Tabata.

Square Enix has said that the three games in the subseries have sold over 11 million copies to date worldwide, and their landing on PC will surely push the figure even higher.
