Incredible news for JRPG fans

Everybody thought that Square Enix emptied their surprise pack for the year when they announced Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 consoles during the E3 media summit. Apparently, the company still had other surprises, but wanted to wait a bit more to reveal them. The time has come: Final Fantasy XIII has been officially announced for PC systems. Yes, we're talking about the same game that was, until last week, a PlayStation 3 exclusive!

An even more interesting thing is the fact that, unlike some people might expect, the PC version of FFXIII will not be a console port, but rather the Xbox 360 and PS3 variants will be ports of the PC game. Also, at the moment, according to game producer Yoshinori Kitase, just the PC version is functional, with the PS3 one in the works and the Xbox 360 one on the waiting list.

"The content will be the same on all platforms," said Kitase. "However, we have yet to determine how many discs will be required for the 360 version. We'll have to consider the differences between formats. Currently the game is being built on PC, where it's actually functional. We're still focusing on making it work on PS3, so it's difficult to know how long the process of taking it to 360 will take."

We don't know whether we should consider this announcement another blow for the PS3, (because it doesn't really matter how many platforms you lose your exclusivity to) or just a major win for PC systems. Either way, one thing is clear: Square Enix has big plans for the "dying" (according to a few so-called specialists) system: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus and a new untitled massively multiplayer online game are expected to be presented for the PC during the Tokyo event next month.
