Final Fantasy XIII-2 has finally received a concrete release date in North America, with its developer and publisher, Square Enix, confirming that the new role-playing game will be out in January, next year.

Square Enix's Final Fantasy series hasn't been doing so well, with the last big installment, Final Fantasy XIII, not managing to rise to the expectations of many gamers.

Now, the company is trying to make amends with a new and improved Final Fantasy XIII-2, a spin-off based on the action of the first XIII title, which taking place five years after its end, with Serah Farron, the sister of Lightning, the protagonist of the original, trying to find her in an unknown world.

Square Enix confirmed a release date for the title in its native Japan at E3 2011 one month ago, but kept fans of the series from other continents, like North America or Europe, on hold, as it struggled with localization and translation efforts.

The company has finally confirmed a release date for the game in North America, with a PR representative acknowledging on Twitter that the game is going to be out in January, 2012.

What's more, in order to satisfy the many Final Fantasy fans, Square Enix also announced, via CVG, that it will be bringing XIII-2 to the San Diego Comic-Con later this week.

The company is also going to preview plenty of its upcoming titles, including Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the new futuristic role-playing game from the company's Montreal studio, Dead Island, which it will be distributing in the USA for the developer, Techland, or Wakfu, the stylized MMORPG that's set to appear this year, alongside the aforementioned Final Fantasy game.

The San Diego Comic-Con is open to the public between July 21 and 24, and it will offer visitors all sorts of entertainment opportunities, from games to comic books, movies or TV shows.

Square-Enix honestly deserves to go out of business at this point...it's been years since they've released a passable game. Unless they show me something truly surprising, Final Fantasy is dead...and nonsensical sequels like "10-2" and "13-2" don't help...they should be shot for coming out with a game like "13-2"...that's like the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim...it makes no freakin' sense...
